I chose my topic because I like jazz as a musical genre and it seemed to me like an
interesting topic. Also, as an African American, jazz is part of my history, and I wish to embrace it as a whole. Jazz also may help me find out more about my heritage. I think it is important for everyone to know at least a small piece of this genre’s history, being as it is one of the most listened to types of music in the world today. The development of jazz mirrored the development of an African American culture in the United States.
When I listen to jazz I wonder how it may have come to exist in this world. Knowing its
history helped me understand jazz more than just on a level of it being good music. What I like about jazz is that it is not the fact that it is funky; I like its use of percussion, horns, brass, string, and the bass instead of having guitar be too prominent.
To start my research, I selected two books from the library with the help of my parents and narrowed down topic points. A lot of narrowing was required because jazz is a broader topic than I first expected. Finally, I chose the history of jazz as a music genre. I found my best sources on the internet along with the titles of my books. The only real difficulty I’ve had with my project so far is the location of specific details that mainly can only be found in primary sources. Also because the time periods of my topic are quite awhile ago so finding newspapers from the early 1900’s is quite a challenge.
I chose to do a website because in my opinion it allows me to explain, show pictures, play videos, and experiment with technology in ways I had not thought of trying before. Also having done a website in previous years I have more experience and am more comfortable with the technology. Also in my opinion, using the technology of the Weebly website
allows me to be as creative as I want and I can create my website in the way I wish. Also it allows me to express my interest in this topic and create my own mood in the contents of my virtual presentation.
